For the first time in five years, Park boys’ soccer won the Metro West conference after going 6-0-1. This comes after having a record of 3-3-1 in conference play during the 2023-24 season. Capping off the 2024-25 season before sections, Park tied the undefeated, number one team in the state, Washburn with a tied score of 2-2 on Oct. 5.
Head coach Anson Opara said strategizing to fit the needs of the team and having the players gel throughout the season led to the success they have found.
“I changed the formation we played the whole year,” Opara said. “Another piece is getting some of the players that we’ve had and giving them another year together—it really helped.”
Junior Brian Duncan said the rarity of Park winning the conference holds significance to the team. He said they aren’t content with only winning the conference.
“It means a lot to the team, it’s the first time in five years. It’s fun for us,” Duncan said. “The team’s goals are to make it as far as possible, especially for seniors.”
According to junior Owen Anklam, the title means a lot to the team. He said it was nice to beat the big teams they haven’t always been able to compete with.
“It’s a huge accomplishment for us. It was a great feeling to be with our friends on the bus when we found out,” Anklam said. “It’s amazing to beat Orono and Benilde (who) we haven’t beat in a while and to get the plague in the trophy case finally.”
Opara said the team has improved immensely on the defensive side of the ball with strong players.
“Defense was a huge piece. Minus a few games, we’ve barely given up any goals,” Opara said. “Brennen Hogan in goal has had some amazing games and (so) has Owen Anklam. He normally played front but we transitioned him and he’s done a really good job.”
Duncan said throughout the season the team came together and worked on bettering their ball movement. He said the team can still build on what they have been working on.
“Great teamwork has been an improvement and moving the ball. (We need to be) less selfish with the ball,” Duncan said.
Anklam said the team isn’t content and they have goals of making a run in the playoffs, even against tough competition.
“Obviously we want to make it to state. I feel we have a really good chance this year,” Anklam said. “We have Kennedy in our first game, we can play with them. Then, we’ll have another tough test with Washburn.”
Sections start for the Orioles playing Bloomington Kennedy at 7 p.m. Oct. 9 at the home stadium.
