Park girls soccer players watch their teammate during a shootout Oct 12. Park lost in the shootout 4-2 after tying 1-1 in regular play.

Starting this year, Rogers high school joined the 6AAA soccer section. This means both Park’s boys and girls soccer teams had some new competition. Park’s girls soccer team faced Rogers for the first time on Oct. 12 and lost 2-1.

According to senior captain Vesna Dennison, Park’s girls soccer team didn’t know anything about the new team going into their game against Rogers.

“There was no one really to compare them to from our conference or section so we had nothing but high hopes going in,” Dennison said. “(We) knew we had nothing to lose.”

Senior John Tuite said the addition of the Rogers team didn’t change how the boys soccer team practiced this season.

“I would say (we haven’t changed),” Tuite said. “Mainly because they replaced South, and historically South has not been a very strong team in our section.”

Head coach of the girls team, Anne Beaton said Park performed well despite Rogers’ efforts.

“They were hardworking and they had some fast people up front,” Beaton said. “(But) we played great. I was really proud of us today.”

Dennison said the game against Rogers went well for the team even though Park ended up losing.

“It was a pretty evenly matched game. I honestly think we were the better team on the field,” Dennison said. “In the end, it didn’t go our way but this was probably one of our best games of the year.”

Even with the addition of Rogers’ team to the section, Beaton said Park’s girls soccer team had a good season.

“We’ve been putting into play a lot of the things we were working on this season,” Beaton said. “I’m really proud of our season.”

Both boys and girls soccer ended their season on Oct. 14.
