Emma Tessien: Dancer
March 26, 2014
When did you start dancing and why?
I started dancing when I was 2 years old. My parents put me in it because every little girl does ballet. I started competing when I was 6, and the whole idea of competition was fun for me, so I stuck with it.
What is your favorite style of dance and why?
I really like tap because it just comes really natural to me.
What are some challenges you face in dance?
It’s very time consuming. We practice for six months before a competition. It’s also very strenuous on your body, so it’s hard to do my best when I’m sore.
How do you mentally prepare yourself for competition?
I get very nervous before competition, especially for solos. It’s hard to make up for mistakes and the judges can remember you for that. To not be nervous, I talk to my dance teacher backstage, and I don’t watch the dancer before me because it puts pressure on me. It also helps to have a lot of people cheer for me.
What is your favorite dance memory?
In the summer of 2012, my team won nationals in Virginia Beach. They only announced the top five teams and we thought we weren’t going to make it. When they announced second place, we knew that we won. Everyone was crying and all our hard work had paid off. I have been dancing for 12 years and everyone’s ultimate goal is to win dance nationals, so I felt very accomplished.
What are some things that dance has taught you?
Dance has taught me about dedication. You need to work hard and learn how to take criticism. You don’t just get a number for a score, but actual feedback from the judges so it taught me how to take the criticism. It also taught me time management skills.
How did dance teach you how to manage your time?
It taught me that I needed to get my homework done right after school so I’m not up until midnight. I only have a window of two to three hours until I have to go to dance, and sometimes I’m there until 10 p.m.
Do you have any plans on dancing in the future?
I’m planning on dancing in college and maybe have some profession involving dance, even if it is on the side because dance is my favorite thing.
