Meet the Athlete: Makaila Winward

Grade: Freshman Sport: Volleyball

Hannah Leff

How long have you been playing volleyball?

Since sixth grade.

What position do you play?

I’m mainly an outside hitter but this year I’ve been playing all positions.

Why did you decide to start playing volleyball?

My mom played volleyball when I was little and I thought it was the coolest thing ever, so I decided to give it a try.

How do you feel about being on varsity as a freshman?

It’s fun. I get to interact with old high schoolers, which made it easier to adjust to the high school setting. I like it a lot.

How has volleyball changed your life?

I’m more of a positive person. Since I’ve started playing, I’m better at focusing on the positive and just keeping my head up.

What are your goals this season?

This season I want us to go to State. I want us to get a whole bunch better. We are at this point where we can get better but we’re just not there yet. I really want to push the point and get there.

What actions have you taken to try to meet this goal?

I have been running on my own when there isn’t practice, and whenever there is practice I try to push myself to stay with the front group because I’m not usually running in that group.

What is your favorite volleyball memory?

Last year, I remember the moment I got my first varsity kill and everyone cheering for me. It was the best feeling ever.

Who inspires you to play and why?

My mom inspires me to do my best and work my hardest.

Do you see yourself playing volleyball after high school?

Yes, I love playing volleyball and I can’t imagine my life without it. I don’t know where I want to go (for college) but I really want to go D1.
