What got you into basketball?
First, my brothers, they always played basketball in our backyard, and I didn’t really like it at first I played soccer. Tall of a sudden, after watching the NBA and all those games, it made me want to play. Then I joined a rec team, we played a little bit and then I joined an actual middle school team. I just gained an appreciation from there.
What stands out the most to you about being a homeschooled athlete?
Being able to focus on basketball, obviously, maybe a little more than the average student, just because school is more chill sometimes, and I can focus on school and basketball both at the same time, which is nice.
What do you do to stay connected to your teammates when you’re not attending school?
I talk to them and text them obviously, but also social media plays a big role in that and keeping in touch. We also have team dinners and film sessions and we’ll go out for food sometimes. All of that in addition to practice (helps me connect).
What are your goals both academically and athletically?
To go to a division one college, that’s my goal, and keep playing basketball while I’m there. I want to be able to get a good GPA and good grades in school at the same time because I know that college is a lot different than being homeschooled.
What are some challenges of being a homeschooled athlete?
Probably meeting new people is definitely a challenge because you don’t see many people when you’re at home. Then being able to stay disciplined with your school and get all your work done (can be a challenge).
Who or what has been your biggest inspiration in your life?
My brothers were the first people to encourage me to go outside and play with them. There are a couple of NBA players I really like to watch like Tyrese Maxey because the way he plays, he’s a great point guard. I really like to watch Michael Jordan if I’m watching super old games.
What is your favorite basketball moment?
My favorite game I’ve ever played was in middle school. I hit 10 threes and I went 100% from the field, and then I had the game-winner at the end.
What’s your pregame routine/ritual?
I like to take a nap and think about the game before I actually go to play. I imagine myself in the game and visualize what I’m going to do.
What’s the best piece of advice you can offer others?
Stay consistent, even though you may not see progress. Every day you go to the gym, you get better.
