Girls’ track to host race fundraiser
Glo For It allows community to participate in race

With the seemingly age-old gym mile run, most students have raced against each other many times, often trying desperately to win.
Students interested in having another chance to run in a setting like this now have an opportunity at the girls’ track team’s Glo For It fundraiser.
According to head coach Christine Tvrdik, the team hosted its first Glo For It fundraiser last year and will host the event again this year May 15. The fundraiser is in the form of several races and raises money for the team. Tvrdik said students, teachers, members of the community and other supporters are encouraged to participate.
Tvrdik said the event features races for all levels of ability, based on the mile times participants expect to achieve.
“There are a bunch of race categories, all the way from walkers to sub five (minute mile runners),” Tvrdik said.
Although the team hopes to use this to cover all costs of the current track and field season, the coaching staff doesn’t want the event to be too big, according to Tvrdik.
“We want to raise money for the team, but we need it to be manageable, hopefully close to last year’s numbers, which were around 70 people,” Tvrdik said.
Tvrdik said it can be difficult for people to get the experience of racing when the track is crowded, giving them reason to avoid a larger event.
“We’re trying to provide a fun, competitive atmosphere, especially for the faster guys who are really fun to watch (race),” Tvrdik said. “Too many people on the track makes this tough.”
Junior Madison Vignes is a distance runner on the team who, along with the other track athletes, will be helping with the event set up and encouraging people to participate in the Glo For It run. She said the event benefits the team by raising money and benefits the participants by allowing them to get a feel for what the sport is.
“I feel that it’s a much better form of fundraising, mainly because it’s a lot more enjoyable than selling things,” Vignes said. “It gives parents and friends a glimpse of what track is really like.”
Vignes said another reason for the team’s fondness toward the fundraiser is the amount of money the event is able to raise.
“It’s nice because with this one event we are able to make enough money to support the entire program,”Vignes said.
Overall, Tvrdik said along with its goal to raise adequate funds for the team, the main goals for the Glo Run are to have an enjoyable event where people can have a good time competing against each other.
“We’re trying to do something that’s actually related to the sport, and should be a fun thing for people to be involved in,” Tvrdik said.
Students interested in supporting the team can get forms from any girls’ track athlete or from Coach Tvrdik in room C159. The Glo For It event will take place 7 p.m. May 15 at the high school track and has an entry fee of $15.
