Ultimate team moves outdoors
Boys’ team begins practices outside, on fields
April 14, 2016
Despite the initial lack of space for boys’ ultimate practices, junior Santeyne Thornton looks forward to more outside practices in the future.
“(The practices) are at places like (Park Spanish Immersion) and some of them are at the middle school,” Thornton said.
According to coach Marc Pedone, the team couldn’t start officially practicing outdoors until April.
“We are actually not allowed on fields and parks until mid-April. That puts a little damper into our practice schedule because our season started April 7. Right now, we have been doing a lot of indoor practices,” Pedone said.
Pedone said outdoor conditions drastically affect play and game time.
“Ultimate is an outdoor sport — the wind and the weather can affect the Frisbee in a game so much that practicing outside really gives you the best way on how to react to the natural area,” Pedone said.
Thornton said he prefers practicing outdoors because it allows the team to play under varying conditions in an open space.
“Indoor practices are a lot more crammed in. There is a lot less space. For outdoor practices, you have a lot more space and you can also adjust to the weather,” Thornton said. “In indoor practices you can’t adjust to weather or wind conditions.”
According to Pedone, the team’s home field changed locations because other activities occupy the old space.
“Our home field this year is at Oakdale Park. That has changed this year because the high school field place was our home field last year. Our understanding is that is being taken by other spring sports because of the work being done on the stadium field,” Pedone said.
The next boys’ ultimate game takes place at 6 p.m. April 14 against Bloomington Kennedy at Oak Hill Park.
