Boys’ team has high hopes to place at conference, sections

With changes in coaching and many new swimmers, the boys’ swim team is preparing for the end of the season.

After former head coach Amanda Forsberg took a leave of absence for the school year, former assistant coach Joe Yaeger became the team’s head coach. As of Jan. 30, the team’s record was 2-2-1. Yaeger said his six years as an assistant coach have helped him transition to head coach position.

“I think the big thing is I know all the kids well, so I have a different level of trust with them than most head coaches,” Yaeger said.

Some swimmers believe this change in coaching has been positive. Senior captain Branch Johnson said he has noticed greater motivation among teammates this season.

“People are taking practices more seriously, and are starting to improve their technique,” Johnson said.

After losing to Spring Lake Park Jan. 10 the team will not be able to win the North Suburban Conference. Yaeger said while he expects to finish among the top three teams in the conference, he now wants to focus on sections, Feb. 21-23.

“The goal is to finish strong at conference, and continue our momentum at sections,” he said. “I want everyone to get their fastest times and keep swimming hard.”

The team will compete against Columbia Heights Feb. 7, which will be an opportunity for the team to improve its record before the end of the season in order to rise in conference rankings, according to Yaeger.

One way the team has improved is by expanding. Junior Elliot Slade said he attributes the team’s success to an influx of talented young swimmers.

“The new guys have really helped our team this year,” he said. “It’s great to see really good swimmers at such a young age, to see that there is a future for the team.”

Freshman Ryan Casey said he believes the team’s dedication to practice has helped them improve.

“One of our strengths is our determination to do whatever we need to do. We work hard, but it pays off,” Casey said.

Upcoming meets include a meet at Columbia Heights Feb. 7. The season will end with the State meet March 1 and 2.
