As fans anxiously waited for the buzzer to go off to finish the first quarter, the boys’ varsity basketball team played the hardest they have ever played, according to junior captain Ray Whitlock.

The boys team was neck and neck with Benilde St. Margaret’s on Tuesday Jan. 11, at St. Louis Park High school. Whitlock scored 15 points with many assists from senior Wes Johnson.

The boys played were almost tied with BSM during the first quarter with the score of 30-33.

Senior Nick Kjos also scored 11 points during the game.

Captain Wes Johnson said he thought the boys played really hard.

“I was hurt so I couldn’t really play but we had a lot of younger guys step up and that helped a lot and it’s always good to beat Benilde,” Johnson said.

Sophomore Miykal Howard scored 18 points during the game, playing almost the whole time during the three periods.

The score was almost tied during the second period, 52-53 with five minutes remaining.

1:14 minutes were left in the game and the score was 58-56, St. Louis Park in the lead.

“This is the most exciting basketball game I’ve ever been to,” senior Keenan Kniesel said. “Usually I’m not a huge fan of basketball but this game changed that. SLP and BSM have always been rivals so it makes the match up that much more intense and it’s always great to beat a rival.”

The boys won the game 67-62. The boys next game is January 16th, Cooper high school at 7:00 pm.
