Even though the boys’ swim team wrapped up its section meet Feb. 28, the season continued for varsity swimmer Nate Stone, who made it to state.

The boys’ team moved up to AA division last year, which means the times required to get to state are much faster than the previous A division. Nonetheless, Stone still made it to state in his best event, the 100 yard butterfly.

Stone said he believes an increase in yards of  butterfly from head coach Amanda Forsberg helped him reaches his goals at sections and state.

“Forsberg increased how much fly I was doing by around a thousand yards everyday,” Stone said.

To help put this in perspective, the team swims around 7,000 yards a day, and for Stone, 1,000 of that would be all butterfly.

“We did a lot more fly towards the end which helped and we changed the weights a little this year. We tried to do some racks but Nate actually broke it twice,” Forsberg said.

These extra yards of butterfly paid off in Stone’s section meet where he got 25 points for the team and placed fifth in the 100 butterfly.

“My best time of the season before sections was a 54.79. The state cut was 53.50 and my finals time at sections was a 53.02,” Stone said. “I was able to make it back to state this year and make it back to finals and finished 15th overall in the 100 fly.”

Stone’s preliminary time was a 52.27. He said he added a little in finals which is not uncommon and finished the season with a 52.45.

“I know a goal for him was to get the pool record and the team record and he got both of them. I was excited for him. He put the effort in and he got the time,” said Forsberg.
