Girls fight for spots on varsity

With the merge with Hopkins, senior girls’ hockey captain Elena Basill finds this season completely different than last year because of the amount of girls.

“It’s a lot different because there’s a lot more girls to start off with, and I think it’s a lot more competitive,” Basill said.

According to Basill, making varsity this year  was harder, which made it something to work for.

“Last year, we all got a spot on varsity, but we really more had to earn our playing time,” Basill said. “This year, we actually had to earn our spot on varsity to start out with.”

Sophomore Katie Fredrickson said she foresees an enjoyable and competitive season.

“I think our team will be good. We have a lot of good girls, and it’s going to be fun,” Fredrickson said. “(The season will be) more intense than last year because we are playing in a better conference now.”

According to Basill, five out of 12 Park girls play for the varsity team.

The team already had two scrimmages, one against Rogers Oct 31 and another against South St. Paul Oct. 31. According to Basill, the scrimmages helped the players bond with each other

“It was really fun, especially because we didn’t have lines yet at the scrimmage so we just mixed around,” Basill said. “We got a chance to play with everyone, see who we worked well with. I think it was a really good experience.”

Junior Haley Kirchner said she thinks once the team members start practicing together, they will learn how to play together.

“I think that once we start playing together as a team we’re going to start cooperating together and communicating and figuring out what we are supposed to be doing on the ice,” Kirchner said.

The team’s next game takes place at 7:15 p.m. Nov. 10 at New Prague high school.
