February 17, 2023
On Feb. 16, the St. Louis Park Rec Center was decked out with senior jerseys, banners and stands filled with supportive fans. Boys’ hockey took a 3-1 win in their final game before sections against Bloomington Jefferson — leading the Orioles into sections where they will skate for a chance to go to state.
According to assistant coach Derek Camenga, senior night was encouraging to the team and seniors.
“Senior night gave us an extra spark,” Camenga said. “Our seniors were all over the ice tonight and it was great to see.”
Junior Henry Schrader said Park was looking forward to the game and emphasized the team’s enthusiasm for the large crowd.
“We were looking forward to the crowd,” Schrader said. “It was senior night so we knew there were going to be a lot of people here. We were just excited to play.”
Senior Mason Amesle said the support that people brought to the game was encouraging to the team’s work ethic.
“(Senior night) really brought good spirit to the team,” Amesle said. “There was good energy in the building and that helped us.”
Schrader said the Orioles were determined to play with intention and finished the season strong.
“We definitely knew we were playing for something tonight,” Schrader said. “We played like we had something to prove.”
According to Camenga, Amesle is a dependable player who leads by example on the ice.
“Mason Amesle has been all over the ice all year. He is very fun to watch and he is a very reliable leader,” Camenga said. “He stays focused and is always ready for the next shift.”
As the season wraps up, Amesle said he enjoyed playing with his co-captain, Teddy Dahlin.
“My co-captain Teddy Dahlin has worked hard all season and it’s been great playing with him,” Dahlin said.
Camenga said he hopes to improve the team’s intensity before sections.
“Keep the energy up,” Camenga said. “Sometimes in games (the energy) gets a little low but we have to find a way.”
The time, date and place of sections are TBD.
