Olivia’s Golden Globe predictions
January 9, 2016
Movies
Best motion picture – Drama
Among the nominees, “Spotlight” easily takes the cake. While the rest of the movies nominated, specifically “Carol” and “Room” could sneak out and win this award, “Spotlight”’s edge, actors, cinematography and everything in between helps to make it the clear winner.
Best motion picture – Comedy or Musical
Sure, I hope to see “Spy” or “Trainwreck” take home this award, but based off of what the critics tend to favor and the Globe voters tend to go for- which is basically the opposite of the fan favorite, usually more indie or unknown, “The Big Short” or “The Martian” will most likely beat out the other films in this category.
Best Actor and Actress in a motion picture – Drama
Brie Larson, hands down, should win Best Actress. Larson’s portrayal on a woman trapped in a room for years and who comes to terms with life outside the room brings the audience to tears.
On the other hand, this year is (fingers-crossed) the year Leonardo DiCaprio takes home the Oscar for “The Revenant,” and hopefully should (fingers-crossed) take home the Golden Globe as well.
Best Actor and Actress in a motion picture – Comedy or Musical
Deciding between Maggie Smith, Jennifer Lawrence and the rest of the actress nominees seems downright impossible. But for this year, it’s a tossup between Jennifer Lawrence in “Joy” and Amy Schumer in “Trainwreck.”
Now for best actor, I’m leaning towards Steve Carell in “The Big Short,” although Matt Damon’s mostly solo performance in “The Martian” makes him a frontrunner as well.
TV
Best TV series – Drama
With this being one of the trickier categories, seeing as the Globes tend to pick newbie dramas and not necessarily fan favorites, I’m leaning towards “Mr. Robot” or “Narcos.” Though seeing “Empire” take home the Globe would make me, and lots of others, extremely happy.
Best TV series – Comedy or Musical
While “Orange is the New Black” holds a special place in my heart, nothing quite compares to “Veep.” Perfectly timed jokes, flawlessly casted actors and it provides just the right amount of inappropriate and offensive jokes.
Best Actress and Actor in a TV series – Drama
For actors, you should expect to see Rami Malek from “Mr. Robot” making an acceptance speech at the Globes, though seeing Jon Hamm win this year’s Globe for “Mad Men” would please the crowd.
As for actresses, my intuition leans towards Viola Davis for “How to Get Away With Murder” because Davis performs irresistibly in the show.
Best Actress and Actor in a TV series – Comedy or Musical
Yet again, Julia Louis-Dreyfus deserves to win best actress in this category for “Veep.” No questions asked.
While the Globe’s tend not to choose back-to-back winners, Jeffrey Tambor from “Transparent” could win this category two years in a row. Both Louis-Dreyfus’ and Tambor’s incredible portrayals on their respective shows not only set them apart from the rest of the nominees, but also help to make these shows some of the most popular and most impressive on TV.
