Meet the Athlete: Anders Nackerud

Grade: Junior Sport: Cross country

Adam Johnson

When did you start running for the cross country team?

Five years ago, in eighth grade.

When did you make varsity?

Two years ago, in the fall of my sophomore year.

What do you enjoy most about running?

I like that it is a sport that you play against yourself. You are constantly trying to beat your best time and it’s not about who is around you — it’s just you.

What is the hardest part for you?

Probably the races, honestly. I am not very good at racing but I do enjoy running. It is just the competition aspect that is not my favorite.

Who is an inspiration to you?

Coach Chris (Nordstom), he’s a very nice guy. He is constantly worrying about his runners, telling us what we need to do to be a good runner, and it is really nice having someone that knows what they are doing as a coach.

What is your goal for this season?

To run a 5k under 18:30 because I’ve never done that before. My fastest time so far is 18:35.

What actions have you taken to try to meet this goal?

I have been running on my own when there isn’t practice, and whenever there is practice I try to push myself to stay with the front group because I’m not usually running in that group.

What is your favorite memory with the team?

Last year’s section meet. It was around 35 degrees, and it was also sleeting so that was pretty bad, but we actually did pretty good at the race. I’m not exactly sure how the team did, but I know we beat Benilde-St. Margaret’s which was one of the goals our coaches had for us.

How do you train in the off-season?

I go down to Westwood Hills Nature Center and run around the lake there. When I wasn’t working this summer I would always go running, which was about two times a week.
