Zosha Skinner seeks to start new club
Hopes to begin Model United Nations chapter
October 6, 2016
What is model UN?
Model UN is like mock senate, so basically a bunch of students get assigned to a certain country and then within that they have to make or create salvation for larger world problems.
Why do you think this is going to be a good addition to our school?
I think that model UN is an amazing opportunity for critical thinking with the student body, to solve actual real problems and then be able to apply that knowledge to the world and to benefit something that is greater than high school. The skills that they learn in model UN extend or transcend beyond the high school borders and into the actual world.
What are your plans for the club?
Everything is kind of in the air right now. I asked three different teachers if they want to be advisors all of them have not committed yet to being a coach because that takes a lot of time, so right now I am working on getting a student from Macalester college to come and be a coach who is on the Macalester college team. That comes with its own set of things to accomplish including how to get a payroll going, fundraising events and then averaging out what the price that students should pay in the beginning of the year to be able to be apart of the club. Basically right now we are working on a coach.
What steps have you taken thus far to start the club?
I got in contact with the Edina coach. We have talked on the phone several times  and she has been guiding me through the process of starting my own club. She has been giving me links on what to research with model UN and then is looking to talk to the potential coach and adviser as well.
Why did you start the club?
I started the club because I think it would be a great addition to St. Louis Park. It is really great for critical thinking, it involved real work problems and it gets people thinking about solving real world problems and gets people thinking about what they can do to benefit their communities and the whole world.
How can students get involved?
As of now I have been asking people if they want to get involved. I have made a Facebook group, so if students want to get involved all they have to do is come and talk to me or message me on Facebook.
