After signing commitment papers to play Division III baseball at St. Mary’s University, senior Connor Cornell has more than one thing to smile about.

Cornell said his positive attitude on and off the baseball field separates him from other players.

“What separates me is my competitive attitude and staying more of a positive leader,” Cornell said. “Instead of pointing out negatives, I always try to focus on the positives and how to make things better.”

Varsity baseball head coach Brian Kelly said he believes Cornell embodies the good character colleges look for in the recruitment process.

“One big thing colleges recruit on is character. Character plays a massive role in college recruitment for athletics. That’s something I didn’t realize was as big of a factor as it was,” Kelly said. “Any calls I’ve gotten about Connor or any other player in the past year and a half, for all of them, the first question out of their mouth is ‘what kind of kid is he?’”

According to junior baseball player Brent Ryan, Cornell’s encouraging attitude often extends to his teammates.

“He always keeps everything positive,” Ryan said. “He’s really fun to have around and keeps everyone in a good mood.”

Cornell said he committed to St. Mary’s University in Minnesota after scouts noticed him during a summer baseball league.

“I was playing in Legion Baseball, the summer team for SLP, (and St. Mary’s University scouts) happened to be at one of the games and were impressed with my skill,” Cornell said. “I later on got a letter in the mail and I responded to them and we started talking over email.”

According to Kelly, Cornell started the recruiting process early.

“A big misconception of college athletics is that they will find you. That couldn’t be a bigger lie, especially with Division II and Division III athletes,” Kelly said. “Connor started early enough working with (Aaron McEachran) getting his name out there.”

Cornell said he feels excited about competing at a higher level.

“I’m looking forward to the overall atmosphere of college baseball, playing at a higher level,” Cornell said. “Also getting to play with some new teammates and meeting some new people. I’ll play under a great coaching staff. (St. Mary’s baseball) is a really good program.”

Kelly said he’s looking forward to Cornell’s continued improvement after high school.

“Connor has so much character, he’s such a good kid and makes good choices on and off the field,” Kelly said. “He’s really such a leader. I’m excited for his work ethic to continue and for him to be successful.”

Ryan said although he feels excited for Cornell, he will miss his presence on and off the field in the future.

“He’s one of my really good friends,” Ryan said. “I’m going to miss having him around and just being a part of the team.”

Cornell said he will miss his friends and teammates, but is not worried about their success in baseball.

“I”ll miss the team,” Cornell said. “I love all of the guys. It’ll be tough leaving them, but I think they’ll be fine.
