The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) chooses students to award scholarships to based on PSAT scores. Semifinalists are those who scored in the top one percent of the over 1.5 million students who took the PSAT as juniors.

“The (corporation) itself can award scholarships and there’s also a way for colleges to recognize you, and then (give) college-worthy scholarships,” Shope said.

Alongside Shope, four other Park seniors were named National Merit Commended Scholars, meaning they likely scored in the top three percent. Kris Moe, Fiona Petrie, James Vournakis and Jude Wickberg were designated Commended Scholars.

For underclassmen who want to do well on the PSAT and be considered for recognition or a scholarship from NMSC, Shope said to prepare, but not put too much pressure on yourself.

“I took one practice test before I took it, so I think taking your practice tests can be really helpful because you know you’re getting yourself into,” Shope said. “Practice for it, but not too much.”
