Welcome to “Cut Through the Noise,” an entertainment column from the St. Louis Park Echo covering new music releases. Every week, a different Echo staffer takes on the role of writer, reviewing recent single releases from a variety of artists.

Logic – “Vinyl Days” ★★★★★

Fair use from Def Jam Records

When the song first starts off, it plays a 1930 music instrumental then switches to a 90s hip-hop beat, then Logic goes in and says “DJ Premier, that’s my homie that’s my idol.” Now you may be wondering who  DJ Premier is. He is an African American record producer who was very popular in the 1980s and 90s. Some popular songs produced by DJ Premier are “In my lifetime vol 1” by Jay-z, “Life after death” by The Notorious B.I.G and “Vinyl Days” by Logic. DJ Premier did a great job making the beats for this song complimenting  Logic’s flow and his aesthetic. Logic goes for a 90s hip-hop style for rap. Also, the cover art for the song gives a skater teen in the 90s who is opposed to making raps. Overall, I love the song and even though I didn’t live in the 90s, this song brings me there.

bbno$ – “Piccolo” ★★★☆☆

When I first listened to the song, I liked the beat and his lyrics. It’s a short song ,so that is a down side. I don’t know much about this artist. All I know is that he had one popular song in 2019 on tik tok called “Lalala.” So by the looks of it, bbno$ seems like one of those SoundCloud/ Tik Tok famous rappers. But overall, it was a decent and quick song and I like it and you should go check it out.

M.I.A. – “The One” ★★★★☆

While I did find the song to be good, I didn’t find anything special about it. The song has a good beat and great lyrics and I feel like it is a great song for late-night parties since the genre is electronic and that goes with the vibe of M.I.A. Since most of her songs are rap and chill. In the song she rhymes her words and I like that about her and her music. M.I.A. had a lot of hit songs in the early 2000s, one of the most popular was “paper planes” and if you haven’t heard of it.
