According to SLP Nest student board member and senior Estelle Tronson, the upcoming Nest concert is a fun way to have students get to know the new coffee shop.

“(The concert) is to get people familiar with the Nest, since I know a lot of people don’t really know much about it,” Tronson said.

The SLP Nest is having a concert 7 p.m. Oct. 6, according to SLP Nest coordinator Ellen Pajor. She said the first performer will be hip-hop artist N.E.B at 7:30 p.m. followed by alternative rock band 9Volt at 8 p.m. She said the concert will cost five dollars for students.

According to Tronson, the Nest planned on having the concert the first week they opened but due to construction it has been postponed until now.

“We wanted something to celebrate that we had opened. It took a little longer than we expected because we were originally going to do it the first week we opened, but we’ve been doing construction and whatnot,” Tronson said. “It’s just going to be another way to welcome students to the space and show what we can do here.”

Sophomore Lea Recknagle said she is interested in the concert and thinks it is a good idea.

“I think it’s really cool that local artists get to express themselves through music in a judgment-free place,” Recknagle said.

Tronson said having a spot like The Depot in Hopkins located near Park is a great opportunity to get students more involved in the arts.

“At The Depot, people would go there all the time and perform there, so we thought it would be great to have a place a lot closer to home to do the same sort of things,” Tronson said.

According to Tronson, 9Volt had been asked to perform at the Nest’s summer fundraising party Aug. 15 but were unable to play.

“We had originally offered 9Volt to play for our fundraiser block party over the summer, but they weren’t able to,” Tronson said. “They were our first choice to go to for an opening concert since they didn’t have the chance to earlier.”

Tronson said this will not be the Nest’s only concert, and she wants more students to perform and attend concerts, among the various other activities the Nest offers.

“We want to plan more concerts, so we want to know what other bands would be interested in performing here,” Tronson said. “We have a whole lot of other events planned, like art galleries, and we are going to do some other fun activities in the fall here.”

Pajor said she encourages other students to get involved with the SLP Nest and hopes for a high turnout.

“We are currently taking art submissions. In November we are looking to have a feature artist, so we are looking for pieces. We also want to have open-mic nights, so if people are interested in that, they can contact us to,” Pajor said.
