‘Red Notice’ will leave you with questions

Film lacks clarity

Fair use from Netflix

When I first hit play on “Red Notice,” I thought that it would be just your average everyday action movie, but was pleasantly surprised with a twist.

“Red Notice,” a Netflix original movie, centers around the story of three con artists: John Hartley (Dwayne Johnson), Nolan Booth (Ryan Reynolds) and The Bishop (Gal Gadot).

They go around the world trying to find Cleopatra’s third egg. Before watching the movie, I was a little hesitant because action isn’t my favorite genre, however, although it was very action-heavy, it still has some humorous parts to it. Nolan Booth was the most comedic character, he didn’t do anything to make it funny, just his lines and Ryan Reynolds delivery was hilarious.

After watching the first 20 minutes, I knew this movie would be full of all sorts of twists and turns. Throughout the movie it leaves questions in your head, like who took the egg? Where is the third egg? These questions eventually get answered.

Although this movie does have a bunch of cool mysteries following the plot, it definitely have room for improvement. I felt the movie was too long — it was two hours long and could be cut down to just an hour or so. There was a scene when The Bishop was in her office and talking to another person and after that one scene we never see them again.

Another thing that could be worked on, is having  better character development. While we know that the con artists are both motivated by their dads, that’s all we really know about them, we don’t really know who they’re working for, or any other motives.

I also feel that Inspector Urvashi Das, played by Ritu Arya, could have been given a bigger role. She was very present in the beginning of the movie, but fell off towards the end. I feel it would have given the character a good opportunity to react when one of the con artist’s secrets was revealed since they had worked very closely at one point.

Though this movie is very action based, they still left time for some fun. My favorite part was when they went to a masquerade dance. It was fun to see the con artist out of their element and loosened up a bit, even though they still were on a mission. I was excited to see what mask would be paired up with the dresses and suits that the characters wore.

Even though this movie has some stuff to be improved upon, I still enjoyed it. The way the actors portrayed the characters in a new and interesting way is mesmerizing to watch. I would recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys action films. It is action-based but, if you are not a big action movie person like me, the film is packed with comedy as well.
