When junior Tommy Guddal walked into the first Film Club meeting on Nov. 16, he said found himself surrounded by the smell of popcorn and other Park students who share a passion for films.

Film club held its first meeting on Nov. 16 in L11. According to senior Film Club co- president Amira Stone, the meeting was to discuss what students wanted to gain from the club and to get to know club members.

“Today, Vince (the other co-president) and I introduced ourselves and talked about why we wanted to get this club going,” Stone said. “We had people say their favorite films and why they are interested in the club and we ate snacks and after we watched a short film called ‘Death to Tin Man.’”

Film Club adviser Andrew Carlson said he thinks Film Club is a good way for students to talk and learn with students who have similar passions.

“Like other clubs, it’s a way for kids to be around each other doing something with someone they have similar interests in. I think it is interesting to be able to learn through film via people’s different perspectives,” Carlson said.

Senior co-president Vince Callahan said starting a Film Club would give students the opportunity to learn about film without the pressure of taking a school class.

Callahan said, “I was into starting a new film club because all lot of my friends that are interested in film didn’t want to take the class because it was a class, so this would be a good outlet for them to make films without having work you need to have due.”

According to Guddal, he joined Film Club to expand his knowledge and engage in conversation about film.

“I am hoping to just have a good time and learn more about film and talk to other people about film,” Guddal said.

Stone said she wants Film Club to be a place where people can go if they are interested in film, and she wants to provide guidance for students who are looking for other film opportunities.

“I want to create a community where people know that these are other people in this school who share this interest (in film), and hopefully have a space for discussing, watching and making films, ” Stone said. “We are also a resource for people who have questions about film schools or summer programs.”

According to Stone and Callahan, the Film Club is still accepting members, and meetings will be held once or twice a month after school in L11.
