According to Kara Mueller, the career and college coordinator at Park, the annual college fair was moved due to the walk out.

“The college fair was set for March 14th, Wednesday, to utilize our advisory time with it and then what happened was we were notified through individuals talking through their counselors about the national walkout day, March 14,” Mueller said.

Mueller said she, along with other counselors called macac, the committee running the fair, to change the date.

“(We) called the association macac, who puts on the college fair, and explained the situation, and we were allowed to change the date, and then she talked to our administrator, Mr. Myers, and he gave the go ahead, and we moved it then to March 19th,” Mueller said.

According to freshman Rachel Stein, the counseling department made the right decision to move the fair because a lot of students are interested in participating in both activities.

“I’m sure many will want to participate in the college fair, and I am interested in participating in both, so I think it’s really important that students have the opportunity to do both things,” Stein said.

Mueller said it’s essential that students have the opportunity to attend the college fair.

“It’s hugely important. You don’t know what you don’t know. Over the years we’ve been helping students figure out what their good at and what their skills are, (and) they should take that to try and figure out what they want to study,” Mueller said. “So it is so beneficial when you can have a personal conversation with somebody from a college who says ‘hey, we have that program for you, it will take you this to get to that program.’”

Stein said students should attend the college fair so they can become aware of potentially applying to some colleges and the opportunities they offer.

“It gives them an opportunity to kind of get the vibe of that college from a person from that college. To hear specific facts and also give them the opportunity to put themselves out there so the college recognizes them in some way,” Stein said.

According to Stein, it is important for students to have the opportunity to attend both events.

“I think it was the right decision to allow students to attend both and to make sure that neither have low attendance because it would be really unfortunate for the people coming here to do the college fair for us if very few people were there because of the walk out and vice versa,” Stein said.
