When teaching one day, spanish teacher Nelly Korman had a revelation and realized she wanted to give back to students by running for Bloomington school board.
Sophomore Sophia Romero believes having diversity on the Bloomington school board will give more students an opportunity to be heard.
“It’s a great idea to have somebody who is bilingual on (a) school board,” Romero said. “It definitely brings diversity and it allows people of other languages to speak up for themselves.”
“I’ve served on the school board for almost two terms,” Korman said. “My students have always been an inspiration and getting to know their struggles makes me want to provide them with the best educational opportunities.”
Korman hopes that continuing her role on the school board will better the community by providing children challenging educational opportunities.
“It’s important for an educator to be a part of decision-making to bring programs and initiative in schools that also keeps them challenged and helps them become the citizens that we need in this century,” Korman said.
Romero said she believes Korman’s teaching skills will be beneficial to the Bloomington School Board.
“In class she always explains things a couple of times so students actually understand the idea,” Romero said. “Students aren’t just left in the dark, so I think it’ll be a great idea to have a good communicator on the school board.”
According to Korman, she is ardent about helping youth receive the high education they deserve and believes being on the school board can achieve this.
“I’m an educator who is very passionate about education and everything that has to do with working towards the well-being in the academic success in students,” Korman said.
