With prom week right around the corner, student council has no shortage of things to do. Their first priority is to develop their ideas for prom and make sure everything is in order for SLP students to attend.
According to senior Erik Lindell, the student council’s main goal for the upcoming month is to finalize plans for prom.
“Right now we’re really kicking into gear to prepare for prom,” Lindell said. “We’re planning on ‘Midnight Rose Garden’ as the theme, and right now we’re working on getting hors d’oeuvres and other snacks.”
Student council advisor Emily Rennhak, said as the advisor, it’s important to bridge the gap between students and staff in order to make things work.
“I work alongside Ms. Weaver, and our job is to oversee all of the logistics of everything. We work as the liaison between students, administration and other staff at the high school to make sure events go off without a hitch.”
Sophomore Addison Grecco said, although prom is the main goal, the student council has plans for other projects going forward as well.
“There’s a lot of side projects,” Grecco said. “My friends and I are working on promoting a raffle for the class of 1974 and raising money for their 50th reunion. Today, we’ve been making posters for the raffle.”According to Lindell, student council has also been focusing on planning the pep fest for prom week.
“We’re planning on having student versus staff dodgeball,” Lindell said. “Potentially a t-shirt cannon and also throwing t-shirts.”
According to Rennhak, the past couple of years, the student council has been making an effort to create new, original traditions.
“We definitely have a lot of events that are traditional for our school, and for high schools in general. We mostly plan school dances and pep fests, but honestly, coming back from COVID, we’ve been trying to kind of establish some new additions and think of new things to do.”
Grecco said the student council often splits up into smaller groups in order to get everything done.
“We usually come together in the morning and talk about what we want to get done,” Grecco said. “Then we split up into groups and figure out who’s doing what.”
According to Lindell, being in student council is a good way to get involved and do something for the school community.
“What’s really important is that we’re doing something bigger than ourselves,” Lindell said. “(It’s important that) we can move forward together as a team.”
Prom will be held May 11 at The Glass House in Minneapolis.
