Club hits it off
Ping Pong Club plans tournament
Junior and Ping Pong club founder Rafferty Kugler looks forward to expanding the club’s reach across the school.
“We’re having a practice soon, we’re going to have an inter-squad tournament to get people excited about the club,” Kugler said. “We got t shirts which people are excited about.”
According to Kugler, winter sports moved Ping Pong club practice to a different location.
“Since there are winter sports going on we can’t practice in the gym so we scuffle the tables to back behind the gym,” Kugler said.
Adviser Jeff Cohen said he decided to advise because of his love for the game.
“I love ping pong, I played growing up with my friends, it was something I always liked,” Cohen said. “It was a good group of kids putting the group together so I thought it’d be fun.”
In meetings, Kugler said the leaders of the club thank students for attending.
“We’ve only had one so far and all we did was thank people for coming and tried to get them excited about it. We’ve talked about what we want to accomplish as a club,” Kugler said. “We’re going to start talking about what ping-pong means to people and try to make it more competitive.”
Kugler said one goal of the club includes increasing membership among underclassmen.
“We’re really trying to get more people from different grades because right now it’s a lot of juniors, especially since juniors started the club. We’ve been getting new members by word of mouth, but I want to try to make posters soon,” Kugler said. “We want to get a lot of freshmen because they will be able to keep the club going.”
