Update: Read extensive coverage here.
Update: A recorded phone message from Principal Scott Meyers was sent to parents around 6 p.m. Nov. 15. The message discussed the results of the Nov. 8 election and related emotions.
“While some are celebrating, others are concerned, even fearful,” Meyers said.
He said the administration has met with students to address concerns and the situation has followed district policy.
“When situations disrupt a school day, they are addressed in accordance with our school procedures and district policy,” Meyers said in the recording.
Meyers said he hopes Park will uphold its values of kindness and compassion while allowing students to learn.
“Please know that our schools are safe, our students, teachers and staff are respected and together we will all learn, grow and understand our future,” Meyers said.
Update: According to an announcement made via intercom at 3:19 p.m., a faculty meeting was held in C350. The Echo’s coverage of the meeting and related issues is ongoing.
Around 100 students gathered in C350 Nov. 15 to discuss race and recent events. Several administrators, including Principal Scott Meyers, Assistant Principal Kari Schwietering and Director of Students Lauren Buxton also attended.
Junior RaySean Smith said he attended the meeting to raise awareness of issues.
“It’s (really) important that people know about this and it’s time for it to get noticed and to speak up about it,” Smith said.
Meyers made an announcement over the intercom system around 9 a.m. Tuesday morning. The conversation occurred from partway through first period until fifth period.
Learning Lab Student Advocate Chris Weaver helped students lead the conversation. Seniors Jayneishia Bunker and Dah Manique Evans facilitated the discussion.
Students voiced opinions about recent events and the administration’s handling of them. Also discussed were large-scale racial issues facing Park.
Smith said the meeting was productive and he hopes for change.
“Hopefully something changes,” Smith said.
During the meeting, Meyers said he has hope that the situation will improve.
Students were not allowed hallway passes in the afternoon.
Senior Audrey Scalici said she learned of the policy at the beginning of her sixth period study hall.
“I am not sure exactly why, but I would assume the rule is because of the discussion that’s been going on in C350 and how people are concerned that the fights that have been going on today are connected to that,” Scalici said. “I guess the school feels like the hallways aren’t safe today.”
Weaver and Meyers could not immediately be reached for comment.
The Echo’s investigation into recent events that led up to the meeting in C350 is ongoing.
