Pelosi ripping speech was excessive
Reputation harmed because of action
February 24, 2020
When I first saw the video of the Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi ripping the State of the Union speech, I immediately thought of how the media was going to make a big deal of Pelosi’s actions. I thought she should have expressed her opinion in other ways such as tweeting, because now I believe she will be attacked for disrespecting the president by ripping the speech because the speech was “reality show”, as Pelosi said, according to New York Post.
According to the New York Times, the president recently made his State of the Union Address Feb. 5., and a video of Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi ripping up his speech afterwards has gone viral getting more than 1.6 million views on the Fox Business’s youtube channel.
I believe the reason why Pelosi ripped the speech is understandable because she didn’t agree with what the president was saying, but it has potential to ruin her reputation. It was very bold of her to do that, knowing she was going to broadcasted on television for millions of people to see.
According to CNN, Pelosi stated that her reason for ripping the speech was because she was looking for the truth somewhere in the papers and since the speech was full of lies, it deserved to be ripped up. It makes sense for her to rip up the paper if she has to sit through a long speech that she despises, but if she expressed her disagreement in another way, it would have been more appropriate than what she did.
I do believe that this wasn’t a smart move for Pelosi. According to the New York Times, the video of Pelosi has been edited to make it seem like she is ripping the speech while the president is honoring the Tuskegee Airmen and military families.
This can take a toll on Pelosi’s reputation, because supporters of President Trump can attack her and repost the video, which can then affect how people think of her.
If Pelosi voiced her opinion in another way, the media wouldn’t have given more attention to the speech ripping rather than the actual speech.
Although I don’t side with the president, I believe that if Pelosi had thought about her actions, she wouldn’t have to face the media and fight to have the video taken down. Once a video is shown to the world, it’s very hard to get it off media platforms. News spreads so fast, so it’s better to think twice before committing actions.
