On Feb. 5, hundreds of people showed up for a protest that surrounded the Minnesota Capitol building, wearing coats to combat the freezing weather. Many of the protesters carried signs that denounced President Trump’s immigration policies, his LGBTQIA+ policies and Elon Musk’s involvement in politics. The event was part of an organized movement called 50501, which has carried out protests at state capitols nationwide, including in North Carolina, Michigan and Florida. 50-50-1 has been mostly organized on social media sites like Reddit and Facebook.
Everyone, including students at Park, should feel encouraged by the occurrence of mass protests. Protesting is an enormous power that every person can wield, and should feel safe doing so. Public campaigns that are large enough can often lead to concessions given by politicians, states and corporations, which in some situations may be desperately needed. Let’s not forget that Park students committed to a walkout in 2021 in protest against sexual violence, which was a month after the St. Louis Park City Council voted to expand a ban on residential protesting. Students’ voices cannot be contained.
It is welcoming to see a renewed movement of activism in the United States. Protesters’ rhetoric targeted Republican lawmakers and put pressure on Democrats who spoke at marches in Washington, D.C. to stand up for their demands. This reflects the real feelings and mood of Minnesotans and Americans who are becoming more politically active.
For me, the anti-Trump protests might make me consider getting active as well. My mom has attended a few protests throughout her life and she brought me to one in 2021. It was an insightful experience and allowed me to observe new people, perspectives and moods. While other people might have different experiences going to protests, I believe it is an opportunity to learn about your local community, activists and action groups.
Things that should always be considered regarding protests are: what are protesters’ demands, what have they accomplished or changed so far and how willing is the opposition to concede to demands? Everyone should take these questions into account when witnessing protests. It is likely that the specific demands of the anti-Trump movement will change over time in response to actions that the administration takes. There are plenty of issues that people already have with Trump, owing to his 2016 presidential election victory, and more that are likely to arise out of his growing conservative push within the federal government through agency overhauls and through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), run by Elon Musk.
