Throughout the years, Park has started to crack down on AirPods and other audio devices. While this is somewhat justified, I believe that devices, such as AirPods or similar devices, should be permitted when students work independently on readings and other assignments. Wireless devices can improve the work and effort students put in and negate distractions.
One reason I believe AirPods are not a negative, but instead a positive during worktime, is focus. Personally, when I have music playing in my ears, it helps me block out surrounding sounds, especially surrounding conversations. When these sounds are blocked out by noise canceling, it helps me focus on my work and ignore the outside world; it is as if the only thing that exists is my worksheet and me. I have found that I am happier when listening to songs I enjoy. I also believe that when I am happier, I focus a lot more and put lots of effort into small, unnecessary details I would not normally pay attention to.
Another reason AirPods help me out is motivation. When I listen to music that I enjoy, it helps boost my morale, which gives me lots of motivation to work my hardest. Furthermore, when I am more motivated, instead of finishing half of my work well and rushing the rest, as most students without music do, the motivation helps me complete my work in detail and submit it on time. Motivation plays a significant role in the amount of work I put in, and the answer is right in front of me. However, due to rules that are more flawed than effective, I struggle to stay motivated, and my work can be rushed at times.
People may disagree with students using AirPods for reasons including distraction. But I believe that music distracting you does less harm than a loud room and constantly having a conversation with other students. Another reason people may claim AirPods are distracting is academic integrity. I agree that people using it to cheat is possible, but that is why I believe it should not be allowed on tests; it should only be allowed when working on a worksheet or taking notes from a text. Helping people work and turn in work on time, not cheating. So when devices are used by the right people at the right times, they solve many more problems than they cause and improve focus for people like me. There was a reliable experiment where they claim AirPods helped with “blocking external distractions, improving focus, and enhancing study enjoyment.” In other words, students using AirPods experience improved focus and higher concentration levels, and enhanced study enjoyment.
AirPods often get a bad reputation among teachers. While they may distract students during lectures or times when it is important to listen, I believe they can be helpful during work time and can help students stay focused and avoid distractions from other students or noises. I believe Park students should be able to use AirPods to stay motivated and focused during work time.
