When did you start playing track, and what inspired you to?
I first started doing track in seventh grade. I think my main inspiration was probably my dad because he did track, and I wanted to get into doing it as well.
What has gone well this season?
Our 4×800 relay is doing really well. We made it to Hamline, which is one of the more exclusive meets, and then we also have a good chance to (reach) state.
What is your favorite memory so far in track?
My favorite memory is probably that (track) is a lot of fun, and you get to hang out with friends and so many other people all the time.
What does it mean to be a captain?
People look up to you, and they can ask you for help when they need it. It’s not a ton of responsibility, but you definitely need to be a little more mature.
What have you learned from being a captain?
Being inclusive to everybody, helping people when they need it and looking out for everyone. In the beginning of the season, people are new, and I make sure that they’re included in team activities going on and make sure that everybody has a good sense of community.
How do you lead by example outside of practice?
Getting good sleep, not doing stupid stuff, making sure I eat well and explaining how sleep helps people, alongside talking about the importance of nutrients.
What goes on in your mind before a game?
Making sure that I’ve stayed hydrated, really getting in the mindset of it’s time to work, we’re gonna get something done today and expecting to be productive, even if it doesn’t feel like it.
How do you stay composed during high-pressure scenarios?
I like to think of the positives in issues. In a situation, I try not to think of what could go wrong but rather what the experience is going to be like and how I can make it more fun and enjoy it.
What challenges have shaped you to get to where you are today?
Progressing over time. There haven’t been very many challenges, but dealing with not (achieving a personal record), doing your best every race and realizing that you can only give 100% and it might look different on different days.
What’s next?
I’ll be doing track at St. John’s, and I’ll also be running cross-country.
