Orioles to play at Saints’ stadium
Baseball takes on rival Benilde-St. Margaret’s
According to senior outfielder and captain Jonny Sorenson, he is excited to take on rival school Benilde-St. Margaret’s at CHS Field, the home of the St. Paul Saints.
Sorenson said he looks forward to the experience of playing at a professional baseball field.
“I am excited to play Benilde since it is a rivalry game. And we are also playing at CHS Field which is a cool opportunity since not many teams get to play there,” Sorenson said. “I am expecting it to be a good environment.”
Head baseball coach Brian Kelly said after finding an available date at CHS Field and contacting Benilde-St. Margaret’s athletic department, the team put some of their fundraiser money towards this opportunity.
“We each pay around 300 bucks, or something like that, with money from fundraisers and get to play on one of the best fields in the state. It’s a really cool opportunity,” Kelly said.
According to Kelly, CHS Field is larger than the usual high school baseball field, causing Sorenson to cover more space on the field.
“Left and right field are about the same which is pretty typical. Center field is 405 feet whereas (Keller Field) is about 365, which is a lot bigger,” Kelly said. “It’s a major league-sized outfield, with a lot of room for Jonny Sorenson to go and track down fly balls.”
Sorensen said the team has been practicing strategies to cover the larger field.
“Since we are playing on a bigger field we’ve been working on, for the outfield, taking deeping fly balls and, for infield, covering more ground,” Sorenson said.
Kelly said he anticipates this game as the first of five games the team will be playing this week.
“I’m excited to play at CHS, taking it one game at a time. And we are excited for 5 games in 6 days this week.”
The Orioles take on Benilde-St. Margaret’s at 7 p.m April 30 at CHS Field in St. Paul.
