After the girls’ synchros 50 point win at sections, the team prepares both mentally and physically for the upcoming state meet.

Head coach Linda Gust said she believes all sports require a strong mental component in meets and games, especially meets like state that bring more pressure to the girls.

“I believe it’s true for all sports that meets are 90 percent mental and 10 percent physical because if you are physically prepared it’s all about the mental part,” Gust said.

To work on strengthening their mental side, the girls have been doing a lot of visualization to mentally practice their figures and routines, according to Gust.

Sophomore Emma Dietz said she feels mental preparation plays a big role in their performance.

“Visualizations is just as good for your practice as actual swimming is,” Dietz said.

For the physical aspect of their training, Gust said not much is required this far into the season.

“As state comes closer, the intensity of the workouts become less because the routines are, at this point, enough of a workout for the girls,” Gust said. “We make very few changes now in general. It’s more just about perfecting what’s left in the girls’ routines.”

Dietz said she believes perfecting these routines and all the visualization at school and at home will help the team do well at state.

“The goal of the team is to do the best we can and hopefully take first, however we haven’t seen teams yet like Wayzata which are our hardest competitions,” Dietz said.

Girls’ synchro will compete at state Thurs. May 21 and Fri. May 23,  8:30 a.m at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
