Every school has important achievements, opinions and events, but much of this information never reaches the students. As a result, many are confused and wonder why they have never heard about it. I think having a student newspaper solves this issue by keeping students informed about what’s happening in their community. A school newspaper also increases participation in school activities and clubs by highlighting club events and sports successes. At the same time, it also gives students a way to express themselves while developing the writing skills necessary for their future success.
Students often take classes that are similar to real-world occupations, such as an accounting course, a school store, a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program or even a school newspaper. I think classes like these provide students with the hands-on experience they need to succeed after high school. A school newspaper offers all of these. Rather than using textbooks, the school newspaper allows students to explore potential career pathways as well as develop the skills for them, such as conducting interviews, editing their work and publishing articles. Students also gain practical experience by copying what professionals do every day, helping them develop a better understanding of career options that interest them. I’ve seen so many people join our school’s student newspaper over the years, with many majoring in journalism or studying a field related to journalism.
I also think that a school newspaper strengthens the community by keeping everyone in the loop. In fact, the Dartmouth student paper proclaims itself to be the oldest, written in 1799 for the exact same reason. Not only is a school newspaper a reliable source of information, but it also regularly highlights sports teams, club activities and individual successes. By sharing these stories, the newspaper helps build school pride and encourages more students to be involved in the community. It also recognizes students and clubs that might otherwise go unnoticed for their hard work. When students see more of their peers being recognized, it creates a more supportive and interconnected school environment.
My final reason as to why all schools should have a school newspaper is that it gives their students a voice. In many schools, students often have questions, suggestions or concerns that don’t surface or reach the right people. A great way to change this is with a school newspaper. Allowing ideas to go public is a great way to build traction and support, often leading to actual changes that I’ve seen in my own school. When students can express their perspectives, it leads to discussion and helps others and the school understand student needs and how best to accommodate them. At the same time, seeing their writing published helps students feel heard, respected and taken seriously, giving them a sense of pride in their school and encouraging them to stay involved and continue improving the school environment.
Overall, a student newspaper isn’t just an easy way to publish stories. It gives students a voice, lets them develop valuable writing skills and keeps the entire school community informed. Schools should support student journalism because it prepares students for the future while strengthening the community around them. When students have the proper resources to learn, grow and express themselves, they become more confident and engaged members of their school. Without student newspapers, this article wouldn’t have even been written.
