Students prepare for spring sports through other activities

Junior Jack Breyak walks into the weight room, ready to start working out to prepare himself for his spring sport.

Many students like Breyak do something during this transition month from winter to spring to stay in shape for their upcoming sports.

Athletic director Andy Ewald said the time between the winter and spring sports is actually not very significant.

“There’s not really much of a gap because, for example, synchro started last Monday and basketball was still playing Tuesday night,” Ewald said. “The sports really overlap each other.”

Using other sports to prepare for a spring sport is effective, according to freshman Olivia Massie.

“I train for basketball all throughout the year and I do track in the spring and basketball really helps with that,” Massie said.

Although many students prepare, training and working out is not necessarily the best thing for athletes according to Ewald.

“For an athlete who just finished their winter sport, having a break and having some down time for a couple weeks is the most important thing and the most healthy thing to do for their physical and emotional well-being,” Ewald said.

Junior Tahyvion Malone said he works out and runs for his spring sport.

“Running really helps me get ready for track and field,” Malone said.

Athletes should talk to their coaches in order to properly prepare themselves according to Ewald.

“They need to ask for their sport specifically and ask what the coach recommends for that sport because every sport is different,” Ewald said.
