Birdfeeder staff looks forward to service

Food shelf open for students in need

Birdfeeder managers prepare posters during their community service class to put up around the school to the discounted homecoming ticket when students donate food.

Junior Dylisi Sheffield said she wanted the manager position to be able to help kids at our school who are in need of school.

“I wanted this position because I think it’s such a unique and cool thing to have at our school for kids to be able to get free food if they need it and I haven’t heard anything like this at a school before,” Sheffield said.

Junior Annika Eldrige said she likes how the process of the Birdfeeder is private so students feel better coming to them.

“My favorite part is that everything about the request process is confidential, so students feel more comfortable putting in requests,” Eldrige said.

Junior Rosie Colacino said she hopes to have the shelves stocked with food as the year progresses so students have more of an option.

“We hope to have well-stocked shelves throughout the year so our students can pick out what they need rather than just cereal, which is our main food stocked right now,” Colacino said.

Sheffield said she wants students to know more about the Birdfeeder so that they can use it throughout the year.

“This year for the Birdfeeder I just really want to advertise it and get it out there so that people know that it exists and can start utilizing it,” Sheffield said.

Eldrige said she intends to increase more donations than the managers have had in previous years.

“My plan is to get more donations and give out more backpacks than past years,” Eldrige said.

Colacino said to apply for the position of Birdfeeder manager,  you must take community service and complete some other requirements.

“To get the position of birdfeeder manager, each of us had to write a reflection paragraph about why we wanted to be a manager, and also be in the community service class,” Colacino said.

Sheffield said she looks forward to the busy times when students are coming and requesting the backpacks filled with food.

“I’m most excited for when students start filling out request forms and the busy times of the year when we are just constantly filling backpacks every day and giving them to people who need it,” Sheffield said.
