SHEC president junior Philip Djerf talks to the group about hookup culture Jan. 5.

At a recent club meeting, Sexual Health Education Club addressed a rising phenomenon in high school and college environments, according to Sexual Health Education Club officer junior Philip Djerf.

According to Djerf, hookup culture is generally accepted as a one time sexual interaction that has replaced the traditional concept of dating.

“The reason that I thought (hookup culture) was important to address is because it’s something that happens a lot that people don’t talk about enough,” Djerf said. “It’s also a subject that parents and teachers don’t know about enough because their relationship norms are different from ours.”

Senior Talia Simonett said she appreciated learning about hookup culture to increase her knowledge about this topic as she transitions to college.

“Hookup culture is a very common thing and more people participate in it than we think,” Simonett said. “I think it’s especially good to talk about before entering college so you are aware of what environment you are stepping into.”

According to Djerf, Sexual Health Education Club (SHEC) also discussed the risks of participating in hookups and one-night stands.

“Casual sex is way more common these days and important to talk about because there are risks that come with it that need to be addressed so that both people involved have a safe and consensual sexual relationship,” Djerf said.

SHEC’s next meeting takes place at 8 a.m. Thursday Jan. 12 in room B112A.

Club adviser Allison Luskey declined to comment.
