Senior Rachel Leadholm said the math department’s annual celebration of Pi day on March 14 is her favorite class activity of the school year.

“We should do more of this,” Leadholm said. “This is my favorite day of math.”

According to math teacher Kristen Johnson, Pi Day occurs annually on March 14 in accordance with the digits of Pi.

“Pi day is based on the first three numbers of Pi, 3.14, so March 14th. And you’ve got to have fun once in awhile in the math classroom, so we take this day to explore Pi,” Johnson said.

Johnson said the celebration takes place in the math hallway, where each door is decorated with Pi as well as pictures according to the year’s theme. Students complete activities relating to both Pi and the celebration’s theme.

“Each of the doors in the math hallway  have decorated their door with P and our theme this year is people, so somewhere the letters ‘p’ and ‘i’ have to be in there,” Johnson said.

Leadholm said students work their way down the hallway solving problems that combine math and pop culture topics.

“Were going down the halls solving some problems that are related to Pi, like movies or themes. I love doing it,” Leadholm said.

Johnson said although the festivities vary each year, the math department’s Pi day celebration occurs every year.

“We do Pi day every year. Some years it’s more celebratory than others,” Johnson said. “This year it’s pretty low key, but that’s OK.”
