Math team welcomes new members

Club looks to progress throughout the season

With the addition of 13 new members, the math team hopes to recover from its two losses and improve its standing record.

The purpose of the math team is to bring students together who enjoy solving creative and challenging math problems, as well as having fun, according to adviser and math teacher Kristin Johnson.

First time mathlete junior Anna Glassman-Kaufman said she is excited for the new season.

“I joined to apply my math knowledge in a new way,” Glassman-Kaufman said. “(So far) I’ve enjoyed meeting new people and being in a new activity.”

Ordinarily, the majority of the members are male, according to Johnson. While that is the case for this year, the team has seen the highest number of girls participating than ever before in the last 12 years. Although the ratio of boys to girls is not equally matched, the age level ranges very evenly according to Johnson.

“We have one eighth-grader on the team and the rest range across all four grade levels,” Johnson said.

So far the team is 0-2, yet according to Glassman-Kaufman, the team seems to be progressing.

“People have improved from the first meet to the second one, especially during the practices,” Glassman-Kaufman said.

Johnson said she hopes to help the team members see math as a lasting experience.

“My goals for the mathletes are for them to learn new mathematics and mathematical strategies, have fun and be competitive within the math league,” Johnson said.

New members are always welcome.  Practices are Mondays after school in A202J. Contact either Kristin Johnson or William Tanberg for more information.
