Teachers hope experience provides awareness, provokes thought
When senior Asa Indritz goes on the Spanish field trip on April 18, she said she hopes to get a better sense of Spanish culture and history.
Many spanish classes are going to see the play “In the Time of the Butterflies” at the Mixed Blood Theater. The production is based on the true story of the Mirabal sisters, revolutionaries in the 1960s who confronted the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo in the Dominican Republic.
Spanish teacher Hanna Anderson said the play contains culturally relevant topics such as women’s rights and is a good supplement to the school’s Spanish program.
“I hope (the play) gives students both socio-cultural and political awareness,” she said. “They will see what it is like for people to live under a dictatorship and for women to live in a sexist society.”
Indritz said she thinks the play will be an educational experience for all who attend.
“It will give people a glimpse of history and show them how to stand up for what they believe in,” she said.
In addition, Junior Katie Peterson said she hopes the play expands beyond what she has seen in the movie.
“I really want to know how it ends after the sisters’ story because the movie didn’t show that part,” she said. “When I was younger I knew someone from the Dominican Republic and I want to learn more about what those people went through.”
