Group talks with authors

Members of the book club recently benefited from new technology as they met with authors over a live online chat.

Head of the book club, Ellen George, said being able to speak with authors online is a different way to experience reading a book. Earlier this year, the group met with “Relic” author Heather Terrell.

“It was interesting and kids asked questions the whole time. She was interesting and comfortable with the online format,” George said.

The book club plans to continue using the novelty of online chat, and is meeting “Perfect Chemistry” author Simone Elkeles on Feb. 20 at 3:30 in the Media Center. A former Park student set up this upcoming meeting.

George said she encourages any student who enjoys reading to join the book club.

“If you enjoy reading, it is fun and different to discuss it with people who also read the same thing,” George said. “Reading in general is such a fascinating experience. It stretches your imagination and there are so many parts of your brain that get engaged. People that read a lot have better vocabularies, do better in school, earn more money in their lives. It’s all around good for you.”

Senior Thomas Djerf said he loves being a part of book club even though he may not always like the book selection.

“I love reading for fun, but I’m so busy with extra curriculars and honors classes, it’s really hard to find time to read, and book club makes you read for fun,” Djerf said. “I like the fact that we have to read it by a deadline and then get together and talk about it.”

Any student interested in joining book club can go to the circulation desk in the Media Center to ask for information.
