Design in the works through new program

The mentorship program with Mortenson Construction has started planning for the project they will work on for the remainder of the year.

ACE, Architecture Construction and Engineering, is designed for students to get a look at possible careers in the science field.

A student team is meeting after school on Thursdays to brainstorm ideas and work with staff members from Mortenson construction.

Sophomore Tess McQuillan said she is interested in a science career and attends these meetings.

“We are designing a healthcare facility, but we haven’t decided what kind of health care facility we want to design or where we’re going to locate it,” McQuillan said.

Sam Register works at Mortenson construction and is helping with the program. According to Register, the program goes through different phases, starting with architecture.

“The meeting on (Oct. 23) will be related to architecture,” Register said, “it will be the day-in-the-life of an architect.”

In this first phase, the students make sketches and plans for the business, before they work out the calculations and feasibility of the facility, Register said.

The team is designing and working out the construction and engineering details of the facility for a presentation at the end of the year at the University of Minnesota.

The team will present in front of professors and other people working in the field for an opportunity to move onto a state competition.
