After small turnout at first meetings BTM leaders say promotion for group will increase

Every two weeks, coordinators Chris Weaver and Oscar Reed and a number of male students meet in C350 to meet and discuss about perhaps the most complicated obstacle: everyday life.

Weaver and Oscar focus on helping high school boys answer and figure out problems that come up in their everyday lives in a way that can help them in the future.

However, as the group has only had two meetings so far this school year, they spent the majority of their time together discussing how they can attract the attention of other students in the school who might be interested.

Weaver said because it is still the start of the school year the first couple meetings will consist of informing members on how to promote the group to younger students.

“The first meeting was small, but was fine,” Weaver said. “We really talked about plans for the year, the norms and how to invite new people into the group.”

Weaver said the first few meetings Oct. 8 and Nov. 4 were spent preparing returning members for a new year of students

“Prior to the first meeting, we didn’t make that much advertising because we wanted to see who was there from last year, and prepare them to be leaders of the group,” Weaver said.

Weaver said in future meetings the larger group will return to their usual customs of discussing issues members want to bring forth.

“We will usually talk about personal stuff; relationships, school, really all troubles that they want to talk about, and then give them strategies to making all those better,” Weaver said.

Senior Joe Warner who has been a member since his freshman year said the group is very approachable when in comes to problems one might have.

“I feel like overall we can all relate, and we can all kinda connect and help each other in a good way, allowing us to talk about what is really bothering us,” Warner said.

Simultaneously with Weaver, Warner encouraged others join the group.  He later said it is anything but demanding.

“It’s a really cool group that is very laid back, and if you are not going already, you should definitely join because its a good way to get things off your shoulders” Warner said.

The group will plan to have its next meeting sixth hour Nov. 16 in room C350.
