No experience necessary. Book club is open for anyone to join at any time throughout the year.

The media center book club reads six to seven books a year and holds discussions on each book after school in the library media center. The library provides copies of the selected book to loan out to interested students. There are no requirements for joining book club.

Ellen George, the club adviser, said book club participation is completely voluntary and any level of involvement is welcomed.

“We have fun and eat pizza,” she said. “It’s always great to talk about books with other people who love to read. It’s something different.”

George said the first book of the year was The Fault in our Stars by John Green, and the club is currently reading Eleanor and Park by John Green. They also hope to read Maze Runner this year.

“When a movie comes out it’s always fun to read the book to see how it compares,” George said.

Sophomore Cole Fahey said he thinks the book club pushes him to read different genres of books.

“My favorite book so far was from last year and it’s called Every Day,” Fahey said. “The book had different concepts that I had never read before.”

The book club hopes to give students the opportunity to rediscover the pleasure in reading that for many people gets lost in the pile of homework and extracurriculars.

George said she encourages students to stop by the LMC to look at the current book club selection.

“Why not get a book for the breaks and bad weather,” George said. “Reading is the best entertainment value by the dollar.”

All students interested in expanding literacy skills to genres other than biology textbooks should check out this club by speaking to any of the LMC workers about signing up. The next meeting will be from 3:15 to 4 p.m. on Nov. 19 in the LMC.
