Peer counselors build trust by establishing relationships with one another

The Natural Helpers, a peer counseling organization run by students, work together in order to have the club running as soon as possible.

Peer counselors continue to learn about the basics of counseling with trainer, Daniel Perez, and have started to build relationships between one another.

Dave Herrera, co-president of the club, said knowing one another is important because peer counselors will need the support.

“We are starting to get to know each other well right now so we can have each other’s back. I believe this is essential since we will be relying on each other for help and advice as well as to vent when we hear something difficult,” Herrera said.

Once the training is complete, the club will be officially available for students in need. Students can decide what counselor is the best fit for them.

“Very soon we will be posting our names on a wall somewhere in the school and kids can go there to look at who they would and could relate more to. They will also have the option to go and talk to an actual counselor as well,” Herrera said.

Peer counselors also want students to view them as a potential link to other resources as needed.

“If anyone needs to talk, we are here. We’d also love to get people the right help even if it isn’t us,” Herrera said.
