Jewish and non-Jewish students address significance of holiday

While the purpose of celebrating Hanukkah is often forgotten, students at Park JSU came together at their last meeting to discuss the purpose of the festive holiday.

Rabbi Tzvi Kupfer, director of Minneapolis JSU and leader of the group’s meeting, said he wanted to allow students to learn about the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah in a fun and interactive way.

“We talked about the miracle of why we celebrate Hanukkah for eight days as opposed to seven, while making menorahs,” Kupfer said.

Sophomore Aaron Burton, a second-year member of JSU, said the activity was both valuable and enjoyable at the same time.

“It was a really fun activity that taught me some cool things. Also, the doughnuts were really good,” Burton said.

According to sophomore Sam Orloff, the President of JSU at Park, the club aims to give people a better understanding of Jewish holidays throughout the year.

“I think this helped clear up misconceptions people have about Hanukkah and broadened people’s understanding, which is the the whole point of the club,” Orloff said.

The group’s next meeting is from 3:20 to 4:00 p.m. on January 8 in room B134. Complimentary sushi and cookies are provided. All are welcome and encouraged to come.
