The addition of two new clubs to the language department allows students to explore foreign culture outside of the classroom.

The first meeting of the newly created Spanish club which took place after school Jan. 14 in B327 was a success, according to junior club creator Keelin Jones.

Jones said he wanted to form a Spanish club after he became interested in the culture during Spanish class.

“I thought it would be a good activity option for after school,” Jones said. “So I talked to the administration and posted information about the club around school to get students interested.”

Spanish club adviser Leah Mark said she got involved with the Spanish club because she knew there was student interest in starting a club.

“Many students had previously asked me if there was an existing club,” Mark said. “So when I was approached about advising the club, I was glad for the interest. Plus, I love doing projects that take longer than the standard 50 minute class period.”

Mark said the club will be primarily student lead with her overseeing the activities.

“Since the club is based on student interest, we will do activities that students plan. If there’s something they want to learn about regarding language or culture, we will figure out how to plan an activity around that topic,” she said.

Jones said there are a variety of activities on tap for the Spanish club.

“We are going to make piñatas, cook traditional food, and possibly take a field trip,” he said. “We may even visit a restaurant.”

Mark said the club is open to people of all Spanish-speaking abilities.

“Everyone’s allowed to come, no matter what level of Spanish they’re taking,” she said. “We have people in Spanish one through Spanish ten.”
