Jewish and non-Jewish students learn the value of Jewish holiday

Students at Park JSU came together at their last meeting to pay tribute to nature and the beauty within it.

February 5 marked the annual Jewish holiday of Tu B’shevat, a holiday commemorating the birthday of the trees in the Jewish tradition. At their meeting, they discussed the holiday over fruit smoothies.

Rabbi Tzvi Kupfer, director of Minneapolis JSU and leader of the group’s meeting, said the aim of the group’s meeting was to teach students the deeper meaning of the holiday and its associated activities.

“It’s important to train yourself to learn from everyone and everything. Nothing and nobody is beneath you. The more open you are to learning from everything, the better you’ll be, and the more value you’ll be able to find in life,” Kupfer said.

Junior Ben Freund, a third-year member of JSU, said the activity helped him learn valuable lessons.

“I learned that no matter who you are, there’s always someone you can learn from and there’s more to life than meets the eye,” Freund said.

According to sophomore Sam Orloff, the President of JSU at Park, the club aims to give insight to the nature of the holiday in an enjoyable way.

“People like food, and by serving something fun that taught deep lessons, it ended up being a really valuable time for the group,” Orloff said.

The group’s next meeting is from 3:20 to 4:00 p.m. on February 12 in room B134. There will be a guest speaker from “Stand With Us,” a non-profit pro-Israel education and advocacy organization. Complimentary sushi and cookies are provided. All are welcome and encouraged to come.
