Jewish Student Union celebrates miracles

Jewish and non-Jewish students learn the meaning of Jewish holiday

Students at Park JSU came together at their last meeting to discuss the significance of hidden miracles in our lives.

March 4 marked the annual Jewish holiday of Purim, a holiday celebrating the Jews getting saved from a genocidal plot . At their meeting, they discussed the background story of the holiday and prepared Hamentaschen, traditional Purim cookies.

Rabbi Tzvi Kupfer, director of Minneapolis JSU and leader of the group’s meeting, said the aim of the group’s meeting was to teach students about the lessons of the holiday in a fun and interactive way.

“What makes it unique is that all of the miracles in the story can be attributed to coincidence. It teaches us to look for the hand of god in seemingly natural things in order to discover the miraculous nature of lives,” Kupfer said.

Junior Toviya Slager, a third-year member of JSU, said the activity was enjoyable and helped him learn a lot about Purim.

“Making Hamentaschen was a lot of fun and it was a great way to learn about the holiday,” Slager said.

The group’s next meeting is from 3:20 to 4:00 p.m. on March 12 in room B134. Complimentary sushi and cookies are provided. All are welcome and encouraged to come.
