Natural Helpers hosts first peer counselor meeting

Presidents stress importance of confidentiality

During the introductory meeting for peer counselors, Natural Helper presidents and seniors Jarrett Walsh, Nick Behnken and Rand Phillips discussed how students must be committed and serious about their role in the club.

“We went over the confidentiality agreement and how peer counselors are not allowed to share any details of the conversations had with students. We then talked a lot about trust with the new participants,” Phillips said.

Adviser Allison Luskey said those seeking help should trust the Natural Helpers as a confidential resource.

“Natural Helpers are students who provide confidential support to those facing challenges. They are dedicated to help students in need of a friend, a listener, support or encouragement,” Luskey said.

Phillips said confidentiality between the peer counselor and a student plays an important role because it establishes trust in the relationship.

“Confidentiality is what leads to trust. Everyone needs trust to participate and get the help they need. The things people tell us are not things they would like you to go around telling everyone you see,” Phillips said.

Phillips said the presidents trust that the Natural Helpers will keep information private.

“We told them that as of now, we trust them 100 percent. We want it to stay that way. We told them that if you stick with this club you can learn life lessons and new things just like everywhere else. This club will help you grow as a person,” Phillips said.

The next meeting will take place Nov. 17 in room B112. Those interested in seeking help are encouraged to talk to Phillips or adviser Allison Luskey in room B112.
