Sophomore Roots and Shoots member Phillip Djerf plans to join his friends in the club on a trip to the Boundary Waters, despite never been camping before.

“I’ve never been to the Boundary Waters but I’m looking forward to going for the first time,” Djerf said. “I think it will be a good bonding experience for all of us.”

Djerf said the club plans on taking a trip to the Boundary Waters at the beginning of this summer.

Club adviser Al Wachutka said he will most likely chaperone the trip.

“Chaperoning the trip with these students would definitely be interesting,” Wachutka said. “I think they would learn a lot about the environment and camping.”

According to Djerf, a limited number of students can go on the trip.

“We can only have nine people in total and we need at least one chaperone,” Djerf said.

Wachutka said the limited number of volunteers available for the trip results in a low number of students allowed to participate.

“Unfortunately I am the only chaperone so far, so that limits the number of students allowed on the trip,” Wachutka said. “If we could get some more chaperones, we could possibly have more students on the trip.”

Djerf said he anticipates his first camping experience.

“I’ve never been camping before, but I think we’ll have a fun experience in nature,” Djerf said.

Wachutka said he feels eager to see what the visit to the Boundary Waters has in store for the club.

“I think this would be a really fun trip” Wachutka said. “I’m really excited because I think the students will enjoy it.”
